What If?

I do consider myself a conservative, and generally don’t vote in favor of more government intrusions, taxes, or dictates. So, I’m at odds with my conservative stance when I say that I am in favor of the new healthcare bill, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA).

It’s easy for those of us (myself included) who currently have good AND affordable health insurance to throw the proverbial rotten tomatoes at the bill, which has the potential in many people’s minds to increase both private insurance premiums and taxes here in the USA.

But I’ve seen the other side of things…when insurance drops NICU babies for exceeding max payout limits, when patients cannot afford a procedure follow-up visit because the family breadwinner lost a job and insurance coverage, and medical bills pile up.  A patient given discharge instructions on prescribed medications hands his written materials back to me, saying, “I won’t need these, since I can’t afford these prescriptions. Personal Healthcare Value: Make It Your Own

In my previous post, I laid out one possible reason why we seem so conflicted in this country about healthcare and its cost/availability: that we cannot determine on a grand scale how much personal value and public value can overlap in deciding how healthcare is to be made available.

The Value of a Life: Does Public Trump Personal?

Did you know that you are worth $4.50?  Or $45 million, depending on which value system you use?  These are somewhat random numbers I pulled off various internet sources…one based on the value of the core substances that comprise a human body (e.g. carbon, hydrogen, etc.), and the other based on the value of our organs and other pieces, even down to the going price of eggs, sperm, and DNA itself!
